Pending State Regulatory Action in Massachusetts
A number of cities and towns in the Commonwealth have begun the process of establishing local bylaws regarding outdoor wood furnaces. In the absence of state regulations, it remains up to the individual cities and towns to do so.

It is expected in 2007 that the state of Massachusetts will begin the process for setting statewide regulations regarding outdoor wood furnaces. The first step likely will come from the US EPA by the setting of an emission standard. Next, the Massachusetts DEP will take a look at what action they want to take on a state level. This site will keep you informed as the process takes shape in the coming months.

Regulations at the city and town level
If you are located in a city or town that is currently considering bylaws on outdoor wood boilers, it is recommended that you attend all public meetings. Other actions you should take:

  • Organize with other outdoor furnace owners in town and work together to become a proactive and responsible party to the bylaw creation process.

  • Become knowledgeable in the Massachusetts state laws regarding the public meeting process, open meeting law, and the public records law.

  • Become a Wood Burners Association member and use this site to support your efforts.

  • Contact your outdoor furnace dealer and ask for information and assistance from both the dealer and the manufacturer.
